A pocket park on the Northside of Minneapolis is the hotbed of an exciting community investment. A coalition of neighbors, private companies, and the City of Minneapolis came together to improve Cottage Park and its surrounding properties.
The Ackerberg Group, Mission Construction, Maple Crest Landscaping, Gertens, BKV Group, Bruce Stillman, Jordan Area Community Council, Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, and the City of Minneapolis came together to reinvest in the Cottage Park area of the Jordan Neighborhood.
The Cottage Park Development consists of four new single-family homes and a major re-landscaping of Cottage Park. Construction of the first two of four houses and landscaping began in late 2006 and were completed in mid-2007.
A main component of the Cottage Park Development was in Cottage Park itself. The park saw new landscaping, plantings, and art. Sculptor Bruce Stillman donated an interactive checkerboard sculpture, Gertens of Inver Grove Heights donated new plantings, and Maple Crest Landscaping donated landscaping boulders and the labor of installing the landscaping. The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board will add new lighting to the park.
Designed by the BKV Group, each of the four houses features its own design. The 1,800 Square Foot homes have three bedrooms, one-and-a-half bathrooms within two floors of living space. The homes come with central air, new appliances, a ready-to-finish basement, and a two car, detached garage.
The builder, Mission Construction, has 20 years of building experience. With previous projects in the Northside community, Mission Construction understands and values the importance of community building through partnerships.
As a part of the Northside Home Fund Cluster Project, the Cottage Park Development benefited from this city and neighborhood partnership. The partnership focuses redevelopment activity to select nodes throughout the Northside in an attempt to leverage investment in properties adjacent vacant parcels. The City of Minneapolis sold several vacant land parcels to The Ackerberg Group as a part of this project, improving the project’s feasibility.
The Ackerberg Group managed the development process and waived its development fee as to manage costs and make the units more affordable.
In 2007, The Ackerberg Group completed a renovation of a landmark Northside building at the corner of West Broadway Avenue and Emerson Avenue North. The 1101 West Broadway Building brought a new coffee shop, credit union, and community building organization to the Northside.
