Often referred to as the Northside, or North Minneapolis, the Northside of Minneapolis consists of the Near North and Camden communities. Each of those communities is made up of several neighborhoods. In general, the Northside is considered the areas west of the Mississippi River and north of Glenwood Avenue, which is the area primarily to the northwest of Downtown Minneapolis.
North Minneapolis is home to one fifth of Minneapolis’ population. Its sixty-seven thousand residents make up the most diverse community in the city. The thirteen neighborhoods that make up the Northside are home to strong neighbors who have persevered through years of social disinvestment.
West Broadway is the commercial spine of North Minneapolis. Emerson and Fremont Avenue provide a significant north/south connection through the Northside to Downtown Minneapolis.
The intersection has a rich past, acting as the crossroads of North Minneapolis. Developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the intersection was one of the major commercial nodes in the City of Minneapolis due to its multiple streetcar lines, its dense neighborhoods, and strong local economy. Today, the intersection boasts significant traffic counts, close proximity to Downtown Minneapolis and I-94, and high pedestrian activity. Businesses such as City-County-Federal Credit Union, Emerge, Bean Scene Too, and The Cookie Cart call this intersection home.
The node is in close proximity to many significant North Minneapolis landmarks such as North High School, the YMCA, Cub Foods, Hawthorne Crossing retail center, and the newly renovated 1101 West Broadway project. Additionally, there are several major commercial developments slated for the next two years including a new YWCA and commercial space by Great Neighborhoods! Development Corporation, and a potential major housing development several blocks west on West Broadway.
